| EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM (Global) Evolution) |
EDGE is a faster version of GSM wireless service. EDGE
enables data to be delivered at rates up to 384 Kbps on
a broadband. The standard is based on the GSM standard
and uses TDMA multiplexing technology. |
| EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service) |
EMS adds the ability to attach simple graphics, pictures,
animations and sound to SMS messages. |
| E-Mail |
The electronic transfer and storage of written messages. |
| E-OTD (Enhanced Observed Time Difference) |
E-OTD is a method used for determining mobile station
location in terms of universal latitude and longitude
coordinates. The E-OTD positioning method is calculated
by the differences in arrival time of signals from nearby
pairs of mobile phone towers. |
| Electronic Lock |
When activated the mobile phone will automatically lock
each time it is turned off to help prevent unauthorized
use. |
| Electronic Scratchpad |
Allows users to use their phone keypad to type and save
numbers into their phone during a call and to also save
that information. |
| ESN (Electronic Serial Number) |
ESN is a unique unchangeable number that is built into
the phone and is transmitted by the phone as a means of
identifying itself within the system. |
| Emergency One-Touch Dialing |
A memory location reserved for storing an important
number. The number can be accessed and called even if
the phone is locked. |
| Error Correction |
Digital technology's ability to verify the validity
of the transmitted information and to automatically correct
errors caused by interference. |
| Feature Menu |
Allows easy access and activation of frequently used
features. User can utilize numerous features accurately
and easily. |
| Fixed Dialing |
With this feature activated, your phone will only allow
calls to numbers you have programmed on your Fixed Dial
list. |
| Floor Control |
The ability to gain access to speak while active in
a Push To Talk session. |
| Fold-Down Antenna (transportables); |
The design of the transportable's antenna allows it
to swivel 360 degrees and fold flat in any direction,
providing convenient storage. |
| Frequency Reuse |
Technology that allows frequencies to be reused after
they have been vacated by a cellular user leaving that
particular cell. One measure of a system's effectiveness
is how far the initial user of a specific frequency must
travel away from the cell site before the frequency may
be reused.
Fringe Area The outermost range of a cellular system where
cellular signals may be weaker.
Full Duplex Incoming and outgoing audio can occur simultaneously,
so user can speak and listen at the same time.
Function Keys The non-numeric keys on your phone used
to access and navigate menu features, as well as perform
memory functions.
|
| EFR |
Enhanced Full Rate. A system that, when implemented
by both the phone and network operator, is designed to
improve voice quality. |
| EMS |
Enhanced Messaging Service. Allows simple graphics and
tunes to be exchanged in addition to SMS text messages.
Requires that both phones are capable of EMS. |
| ETSI |
European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Organisation
responsible for formulating GSM and DECT standards. |
| Fax |
A service that lets a user receive, store, and download
text, drawings, and images. |
| Fixed dialling |
A service that restricts phone calls only to the numbers
pre-defined on the fixed dialling list stored on the SIM
card. Fixed dialling is provided by the network operator. |
| FM radio |
A function that lets the user listen to the radio. An
FM radio is included in some phone models. When listening
to the radio on a phone, the headset of the phone needs
to be connected as the lead of the headset functions as
an antenna of the radio. |
| Frequency |
The number of times that a periodic function or vibration
repeats itself in a specified time. It is usually measured
in hertz (Hz). |
| Frequency band |
A continuous set of frequencies lying between two specified
limiting frequencies. See also Operating frequency and
Bandwidth. |
| General packet radio service |
A GSM data transmission technique that transmits and
receives data in packets. GPRS offers a permanent connection
between the wireless device and the network. |
| GIF |
A graphics file format developed by CompuServe that
uses 256 colours. GIF files are widely used on web pages
because they provide good-quality colour images in a format
that takes up a small amount of space. The file name extension
is .gif. |
| Global System for Mobile Communications |
See GSM system. |
| GSM 1800 system |
A GSM mobile communication system operating in the 1800
MHz frequency band. |
| GSM 1900 system |
A GSM mobile communication system operating in the 1900
MHz frequency band. |
| GSM 900 system |
The original GSM mobile communication system operating
in the 900 MHz frequency band. GSM 900 system is used
in most European and Asian countries. |
| GSM system |
A digital system for mobile communications that is based
on a widely accepted standard. The GSM system typically
operates in the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 1900 MHz frequency
bands. |
| Hands free |
A feature that lets the user use a phone without lifting
or holding the handset to their ear. |
| High speed circuit switched data |
A data transmission connection that is few times faster
that the GSM data connection. It uses multiple channels
for data transmission. |
